SHS welcomes all students to utilize our many services. We recognize that LGBTQ+ students may have specific concerns or issues that they want treated in a sensitive, caring, and comfortable environment.
Looking for a particular provider? Visit our Meet Our Team page for provider bios.
Don’t see the information you are searching for or you have further questions? Have a suggestion for how SHS can be a more inclusive health care facility? Drop us an e-mail to firstname.lastname@example.org.
SHS recognizes that LGBTQ+ students face unique challenges to obtaining medical care. It may be stressful to be asked questions of a personal nature or to feel that you need to keep information secret that may be needed by your health care provider. Our goal is to help you be as healthy as you can be, recognizing that your health is composed of the physical, mental, spiritual, and social. We encourage you to let us know about your specific needs or concerns either before your visit, by emailing us at email@example.com, or during your visit by communicating them to your health care provider.
Student Health can also assist in the following ways:
Comprehensive Primary Care
SHS offers comprehensive primary care services, pharmacy services for prescription medications, and lab services to perform blood work. We can also administer your medication and teach you to self inject if you need injections, potentially saving you time and money by doing it affordably and conveniently. We can also help with referrals for specialty services and/or help you establish at an outside provider.
SHS will file insurance for services rendered. If you would like to check on specific pricing at Student Health for medications, lab tests, injections, etc, send us an e-mail at firstname.lastname@example.org. Many services are provided at a reduced cost, so if your insurance does not cover what you need we may be able to help by saving you money with our services.
Name, gender identity, and pronouns
Our electronic medical record and insurance processes use the university registrar information such as your legal name and assigned sex as it appears on your admission records. However, if you would like to share your name, gender identity, and pronouns, let the provider or nurse know that takes care of you or you also have the capacity to change your own information online in your profile in your myPIRATEchart.
We have several single restrooms throughout our clinics. On Main Campus, you can find 2 next to our lab and 3 others in the clinic exam areas. At our Health Sciences SHS both of our restrooms are single use.
Pharmacy consultation room
If you would like to speak to our pharmacist privately about a medication, product, or question you may have, feel free to ask to use the consult room. Located right next to the pharmacy area, it provides students with a quiet, private room to talk with our pharmacy staff.
Patient education materials
SHS strives to provide educational material that is inclusive for all students. If you are looking for health information and cannot find something that you need, please let us know at email@example.com. We are constantly sharing educational material and welcome suggestions from students on issues they want to find out more about. If you read one of our patient education handouts and have an idea about how to make it more inclusive to LGBTQ+ students, please let us know.
PrEP (Pre-exposure prophylaxis) is a highly effective HIV prevention method that can be used to reduce the risk of HIV infection. PrEP does not prevent other sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Is PrEP right for you? Check out this informational pamphlet from the CDC, and then schedule an appointment at SHS if you are interested in learning more or ready to begin PrEP.
